07 Eagle Grief Gorge

Bidding farewell to the Emperor and his officers, the Tang Monk left Chang'an with his two attendants and set out on the road west to fetch the scriptures. In due course they came to the Famen Temple, where the abbot with more than five hundred monks lined the way on either side and welcomed them in. That night the monks talked by lamplight of the hardships and perils of the road west. The Tang Monk said earnestly, "I made a great vow before the Buddha: whatever the difficulty, I will bring back the true scriptures." The monks praised him warmly.
