10 Yellow Wind Ridge

The Tang Monk and his disciples Wukong and Bajie left Mount Futu and pressed on, eating in the wind and sleeping by the water, mantled in moonlight and starlight. Late one day they saw in the distance a cluster of cottages. The three went to ask for lodging. At the gate an old man lay propped on a bamboo couch, chanting the Buddha's name. The Tang Monk stepped forward with palms together and gave greeting, saying he was a monk of the great Tang in the east bound west for the scriptures, and begging a night's lodging as darkness fell. The old man shook his head. "The scriptures in the Western Heaven are hard to fetch — you will never get there. If you must fetch scriptures, go to the eastern heaven instead!" Wukong could not hold back and stepped forward to argue. But when the old man saw how ugly Wukong and Bajie were, he took them for demons and began shouting for the gate to be shut. The uproar was at its height when several young men and women came from the south of the village with an old woman; hearing the commotion at their own gate, they all came to see. Bajie flapped his ears and thrust out his snout, and they stumbled and sprawled over one another in fright.
