11 Flowing Sand River

The Tang Monk, Wukong, and Bajie had crossed the eight-hundred-li Yellow Wind Ridge; it was now late autumn. As they walked on, a vast white expanse suddenly appeared before them — a great river blocked the way. The Tang Monk said, "Wukong, look how wide this river is, and there are no boats. How are we to cross?" Wukong leaped into the air, shaded his eyes with his hand, and looked into the distance. "This river is a full eight hundred li wide!" he exclaimed. "I could cross it with a twist of my waist, but for you, Master, it would be terribly hard." Bajie asked, "Brother, how can you tell the width at a glance?" "These eyes of mine can see good and evil a thousand li away by daylight," Wukong replied. "From the air I could see this river stretches endlessly and is a full eight hundred li across."
