12 The Ginseng Fruit

The Tang Monk and his disciples traveled west through wind and rain. One day they came to a high mountain wreathed in red clouds, steep and majestic, where phoenixes sang and cranes danced among green locusts and pines — a truly immortal realm, a paradise like Penglai. The Tang Monk said happily, "Disciples, all the way west I have passed rugged and perilous places, but never such fine scenery. Could we be nearing Thunderclap?" Wukong laughed. "Master, it's still early! This place is charming; even if it isn't Thunderclap, it must be the home of holy monks and immortals." The four slowed their steps to enjoy the scenery. In the distance they saw pavilions among pines and bamboo; drawing near, they found a Taoist temple. Beside the gate stood a stone tablet carved with ten seal-script characters: "The Blessed Land of Longevity Mountain, the Heavenly Grotto of Wuzhuang Temple." The Tang Monk dismounted and the four entered.
