18 Black Water River

Crown Prince Mo'ang took his leave, saying, "Great Sage, now that we have rescued your Master, I shall take this fiend to my father, who will deal with him most severely." So saying, he marched the monster off at the head of his troops back to the Western Sea. The Tang Monk, coming to himself, asked, "Disciples, after all that trouble, we are still on the eastern bank. How are we to cross the river?" The river god, grateful to Wukong for helping him regain his palace, said, "Do not be anxious, sir. Let me open the way and lead you across." The river god at once worked his magic. He blocked the water upstream and drew off the water downstream, opening up a broad road. Master and disciples safely reached the western bank, thanked the river god, and continued their westward journey.
