22 The Kingdom of Western Liang

Having drawn far off, Wukong saw the moment was ripe and called, "Star Lord of the Pleiades, where are you?" On the slope the Star Lord revealed his true form — a double-combed rooster fully six or seven feet tall — and crowed once at the demoness. The demoness instantly revealed her true shape — a scorpion the size of a pipa lute. The Star Lord crowed a second time, and the Scorpion Demoness went limp all over and died on the slope. Bajie stepped forward and pounded her into mush with his rake. Seeing the demon destroyed, the Star Lord took his leave. Meanwhile Wukong and the other two, weapons in hand, rushed into the cave. There all the maids, great and small, knelt together and said, "Venerable Arhats, we are not demons — we are all women of the Women's Kingdom of Western Liang, captured by the demoness!" Wukong saw that indeed there was no demonic aura about them and did not make trouble for them. He ran to the rear and called, "Master!" Seeing his three disciples arrive, the Tang Monk said happily, "Worthy disciples — I have burdened you!" Outside the cave, Wukong helped the Tang Monk mount his horse, found the main road, and continued westward. Before departing, Wukong set free the captured women and showed them the way home.
