26 The Lesser Thunder Monastery

After leaving the Kingdom of Jisai, the Tang Monk and his disciples pressed on westward. It was late winter turning to early spring, a fine time for an easy journey. Suddenly they saw a long ridge. The Tang Monk reined in his horse to look: thorns branched in every direction, creepers twined about; though traces of a path could be seen, brambles and prickles lined both sides. The Tang Monk called out, "Disciples, how can we travel this path?" Wukong said, "Let me take a look." He leaped into mid-air and gazed about: truly it was misty and dense, like green clouds at hand; lush and dark, stretching to where no end could be seen. Wukong descended upon his cloud and said, "Master, this place stretches boundless before us — it seems a thousand li away." The Tang Monk cried out in alarm, "What shall we do?" Bajie patted his chest and said, "No matter! Let me use my nine-toothed rake to cleave through the thorns — I guarantee we will get through."
