29 The Spider Cave

The Tang Monk and his disciples were on their way west to fetch the scriptures; on and on they travelled, and before they knew it autumn had passed and winter was spent, and once more spring was bright and fair. One day, as master and disciples walked along enjoying the scenery, they suddenly caught sight of a wooded retreat ahead. The Tang Monk slid down from the saddle and said, "Disciples, rest you here; your master will go on ahead and beg a vegetarian meal." Wukong said with a laugh, "What talk is this, Master? If you wish to eat, old Sun will go and beg the food. Where is the reason in disciples sitting at their ease while the master goes begging?" But the Tang Monk said, "In days past you went far and near to beg for food; today the house stands right before us, so let me go begging once myself." Sandy said, "That is our master's temper: if he is crossed, then even when the meal has been begged he will not eat it." So Bajie brought out the alms bowl and handed it to the Tang Monk.
