30 The Kingdom of Lion-Camel

"Tathagata," said the roc, "why do you use your great power to bind me?" Tathagata said, "I rule the four continents, and countless living beings look up to me. You have bred much evil here; come with me, and there will be advancement in it for you." The roc could not break free, and had no choice but to submit. "Buddha," said Wukong, "though you have taken the demons, my master cannot be brought back to life." "Your old monk is even now in the iron chest in the Brocade Fragrance Pavilion. When have I ever eaten him?" At these words Wukong bowed his head in thanks to the Buddha and went to rescue his master, while the Buddha led his host back upon the clouds to his holy monastery. Wukong went into the city. The young demons, seeing that the Buddha had taken their kings, had long since fled for their lives. Wukong freed Bajie and Sandy, and with the two of them found the Brocade Fragrance Pavilion, broke open the iron lock, lifted the lid of the chest and brought out the Tang Monk. Wukong told them all that had happened, and the Tang Monk thanked him again and again. They found some grain in the palace and prepared a meal of rice and tea, and when they had eaten their fill they packed up, left the city and took the great road westward. To learn what befell them next, read the following volume: The Kingdom of Biqiu. ...White Tiger Ridge, The Five Elements Mountain, and other volumes.
