34 The Linked Caves

The Tang Monk and his three disciples left the Kingdom of Qinfa and pressed on towards the west, and as they went Wukong told them how he had shaved the heads of all its officials. He was still in high spirits over the telling when a high mountain rose ahead and barred the way. The Tang Monk said, "Disciples, look at that mountain: a baleful air coils about it and wild clouds pour out of it. I fear there are demons there, so you must take great care." Wukong laughed and said, "Do not be alarmed, Master. Only come with me." Master and disciples climbed the mountain, and before they could make out which way to go, an icy wind sprang up and in an instant black mist came rushing at them. Wukong quickly helped his master down from the horse and bade Bajie and Sandy shield him. Wukong leapt into mid-air and looked about him, and on the edge of a hanging crag he saw an old demon squatting, spouting cloud and breathing mist, and ordering thirty or forty lesser demons to draw up their ranks and flourish sword and spear.
