35 The Prefecture of Fengxian

The Tang Monk and his three disciples came down from Hidden Mist Mountain and followed the high road for several days, until they arrived before a city. The Tang Monk dismounted and went in on foot with Wukong and the others, and every street and lane they passed was silent and empty, a most desolate sight. A few steps farther on they saw an old woman seated by the roadside, a girl of about ten kneeling on her left and a boy of about five kneeling on her right; both children were sallow and gaunt, and each wore a wisp of straw in the hair, the sign of one offered for sale.
