13 White Tiger Ridge

After taking leave of Zhenyuanzi, the Tang Monk and his disciples continued westward and soon saw a high mountain. The Tang Monk said, "Disciples, the mountain ahead is steep; the horse may not be able to proceed. Be careful." Wukong said, "Master, don't worry; we understand." Wukong walked before the horse with his golden-hooped rod across his shoulders, clearing the mountain path and climbing the high cliff. He saw peaks and rocks piled upon one another, winding ravines and gullies, tigers and leopards moving in packs, wolves and insects in swarms. The Tang Monk on horseback watched with pounding heart. Wukong whirled his iron club and roared, scattering the wolves and insects and sending tigers and leopards fleeing. The four took advantage of this to ascend the mountain. As they reached a rugged spot, the Tang Monk said, "Wukong, I'm hungry today. Go beg some food." Wukong replied, "Master, how muddled you are. Here in the middle of the mountain, with no village ahead and no inn behind, where should your disciple go to beg food?"
