16 The Kingdom of Wuji

The Tang Monk and his three disciples left Flat-Top Mountain, sleeping by the water and eating in the wind, wrapped in frost and dew, struggling onward. As they travelled that day they suddenly glimpsed, in a hollow of the hills ahead, dim tiers of towers and terraces and row upon row of halls and pavilions. The Tang Monk said, "That must surely be a convent or a temple. Let us lodge there for the night and go on tomorrow." Wukong said, "Let me see what it really is before we decide." He leapt into the air and looked carefully about him, then brought his cloud down and said, "Master, it is indeed a temple. Let us go over." The four walked to the mountain gate and saw five great characters carved above it: "Baolin Temple, Built by Imperial Decree." Wukong was about to go in when the Tang Monk stopped him. "Your faces are ugly, your speech coarse, your tempers stiff and proud. Should you offend the monks here and they refuse us lodging, things would only turn out worse. Let me go and ask instead."
