33 The Kingdom of Miefa

The Tang Monk and his three disciples left the Bottomless Cave and pressed on towards the west. Before they knew it summer had come, and the weather was growing hot. One day, as they walked, an old woman came towards them, leading a small child by the hand. "Monks!" she cried to them. "Go no further!" The Tang Monk jumped down from his horse and bowed to her. "Good lady, the road ahead is level and smooth. Why may we not travel it?" The old woman answered, "Ahead lies the kingdom of Miefa, whose king makes a business of killing monks. Go there, and you go to your deaths." The Tang Monk was startled. "Is there no other road, good lady, that we might go around it?" The old woman said with a laugh, "None at all, unless you fly over." With his fiery eyes Wukong had seen at once that the old woman and the child were Guanyin and the Boy of Good Wealth in disguise. He stepped forward and bowed low. "Bodhisattva, old Sun greets you."
