14 Wave Moon Cave

The Yellow-Robe Demon was sleeping off his wine when he heard this and leaped up. Worried for the princess's safety, he had no mind to fight Bajie and Sandy but hurriedly rode a cloud back to Wave-Moon Cave. The Yellow-Robe Demon returned to the cave and saw the princess lying on the ground, unconscious. He raised her and called, "Wife, wake up!" The princess opened her eyes and said, "My heart hurts terribly; I'm afraid I will not live long." The Yellow-Robe Demon said, "Don't worry. I have a treasure here. Place it on your heart and the pain will stop." With that, he spat out a lustrous sarira inner elixir from his mouth. Who would have thought the princess's face showed joy and changed into a thin-lipped, monkey-cheeked appearance? She sucked the inner elixir into her belly in one gulp. The Yellow-Robe Demon was greatly alarmed and said, "Wife, how did you become like this?" Wukong cursed, "Demon, who is your wife? I am Sun Wukong, the Tang Monk's eldest disciple, your ancestor!" The Yellow-Robe Demon realized he had fallen into a trap. Ashamed and angry, he cursed, "So it was the Stable Manager of five hundred years ago!" He immediately drew his blade and hacked at Wukong. Wukong also took up his golden-hooped rod to meet him. The two fought with clangs from inside the cave out. Wukong fought fiercely and struck at the Yellow-Robe Demon's head with his rod. But when he lowered his rod and looked again, the Yellow-Robe Demon had vanished without a trace. Wukong thought, "This demon does not seem to be a monster of the mortal world; he is most likely from Heaven." With one somersault he leaped to the Southern Heavenly Gate, burst into the heavenly palace, and reported to the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor ordered the Heavenly Master to check and found that Kui Mulang of the Twenty-Eight Mansions was missing. He then ordered the other twenty-seven star officials to bring him back to the upper realm. After a long while, the Yellow-Robe Demon was escorted to the hall. Having seen the Jade Emperor, he kowtowed and confessed his guilt. The Jade Emperor shouted, "Kui Mulang, the upper realm has boundless splendid scenery for you to enjoy. Why did you descend to the mortal world without permission?" Kui Mulang reported, "Your Majesty, the princess of the Kingdom of Baoxiang was originally a jade maiden who served incense in the Pixiang Hall and had a secret affair with me. Later she was born into the Kingdom of Baoxiang. To keep our former bond, I descended and turned into a demon to be her husband for thirteen years." When the Jade Emperor heard this, he sentenced him to tend the fire for Taishang Laojun. Wukong was pleased to see the Jade Emperor dispose of the matter thus. He descended to the Wave-Moon Cave, met Bajie and Sandy, and took the princess with them as they rode clouds back to the Kingdom of Baoxiang. The three brought the princess to the golden hall to see the king. Father and daughter met, sorrow and joy mingled. The three descended the hall and opened the iron cage to release the tiger. Wukong smiled and said, "Master, because you could not tell good from bad, you ended up like this today!" Wukong told Bajie to fetch half a bowl of clean water. He drank a mouthful, recited the true words, and sprayed it on the tiger's head, whereupon the Tang Monk resumed his original form. When the Tang Monk saw Wukong, he grasped him and said, "Good disciple, do not leave. Go west with me to fetch the scriptures, and in the future yours shall be counted the first merit." Wukong smiled and said, "Master, if you recite the band-tightening spell a little less, that will be proof of your great favor." The king held a great vegetarian feast to thank the Tang Monk and his disciples. After the feast, the master and disciples took leave of the city and continued westward. The king was endlessly grateful and, leading his civil and military officials, escorted them a long way.
