14 Wave Moon Cave

They drank until the second watch. The Yellow-Robe Demon, somewhat drunk, could not restrain a great laugh and revealed his true form. He stretched out his great hand, seized a woman playing the pipa, and bit her on the head. The other palace maidens, seeing this, fled for their lives. But the night was deep, and they dared not cry out for fear of disturbing the royal presence. The Yellow-Robe Demon did not care at all and simply kept drinking, gnawing human flesh, and enjoying himself to the full. Meanwhile, people outside repeated to one another, "The Tang Monk is a tiger spirit!" The rumor spread until it reached the Golden Pavilion Post Station. The white dragon horse was eating fodder at the trough and heard it clearly. The white dragon horse thought, "Master must have been harmed by the demon and changed into a tiger spirit. Now Eldest Brother is gone, and there is no word of Bajie and Sandy. I shall have to save Master myself!" Thinking this, he broke his reins, leaped into the air, and transformed into a little white dragon. The little white dragon raised a black cloud and looked down from the sky. He saw the Silver Peace Hall brightly lit with lamps and candles, and the Yellow-Robe Demon drinking and eating meat. The little white dragon smiled and said, "Let me play a trick on this demon. If I succeed, it will not be too late to save Master." The little white dragon transformed into a beautiful palace maiden and entered the Silver Peace Hall. She greeted the Yellow-Robe Demon with a curtsy and said, "Prince-in-law, do not harm my life. I have come to pour wine for you." The Yellow-Robe Demon said, "Good, pour the wine!" The little white dragon stepped lightly forward, took the pot, and poured wine into the cup. The Yellow-Robe Demon asked, "Can you dance?" The little white dragon said, "A little, but it doesn't look good with empty hands." The Yellow-Robe Demon unfastened the precious blade at his waist and tossed it to the little white dragon. Taking the blade in hand, the little white dragon performed a flowery blade dance before the banquet. The Yellow-Robe Demon watched with delight and gradually became absorbed. The little white dragon seized the chance and slashed at the Yellow-Robe Demon with the blade. The demon hastily dodged to one side and raised a heavy club called Mantonhong to block the blade. The two left the Silver Peace Hall and leaped into midair to fight. After eight or nine rounds, the little white dragon's hands grew soft and his sinews numb, and he gradually could not hold out. Seeing the situation turn bad, the little white dragon raised the blade and threw it at the Yellow-Robe Demon. But the Yellow-Robe Demon caught the blade with one hand and hurled the Mantonhong with the other. The little white dragon could not dodge in time and was struck on the hind leg. Seeing he could not win, the little white dragon hurriedly lowered his cloud and plunged into the Jade River. The Yellow-Robe Demon could not find him and returned to the Silver Peace Hall to drink. The little white dragon hid underwater for half a watch. Only when he could hear no more sound did he grit his teeth and return to the post station. He again changed into the white dragon horse and crouched beneath the trough. Pitifully, his whole body was wet and his leg was wounded. Meanwhile, Bajie had hidden in the brambles and slept until midnight before waking. He thought, "I am no match for the Yellow-Robe Demon, and I cannot rescue Sandy. I might as well return to the city and see Master first." Bajie rode a cloud back to the Kingdom of Baoxiang and entered the Golden Pavilion Post Station, but he could not find the Tang Monk in the corridors. The white dragon horse saw Bajie and called, "Second Brother!" Then he told how Master had been framed and his own rescue attempt had failed.
